My Journey into Aviation Art

My fascination with aircraft began at an early age, building plastic model aeroplanes and creating my own aircraft from plastic bricks. These first steps into aviation were soon joined by a growing collection of aviation films and autobiographies, each one deepening my interest in both the aircraft themselves and the people who flew them.

Over time, my library of aviation books expanded, giving me a strong foundation in the history, engineering, and design that underpin the world of flight. A defining milestone came in 1995, when I created a digital drawing of the iconic Avro Lancaster using a basic computer drawing programme.

Though simple by today’s standards, it marked a turning point in my artistic journey. It allowed me to explore new creative techniques, refine my skills, and strengthen my admiration for the Lancaster’s engineering, heritage, and the remarkable crews who operated it. Air shows have been another major influence throughout my life.

The atmosphere, the sound, and the sheer presence of these aircraft in flight have provided countless unforgettable moments, as well as a substantial personal archive of photographs and memories. These experiences have enabled me to study aircraft closely, capturing the finer details and unique character of the Merlin engines that have become synonymous with the Lancaster.

One moment stands out above all others: witnessing the Avro Lancaster of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flying in formation with the Canadian Warplane Heritage Lancaster at the Imperial War Museum Duxford during their 2014 UK tour. The thunderous harmony of eight Merlin engines echoing across the sky left an impression I will never forget. It was a breath taking tribute not only to the aircraft and its designers, but also to the bravery of the aircrews whose legacy continues to inspire me. I am also a proud supporter of Lincolnshire’s Lancaster Association.

My membership has greatly enriched my understanding of the aircraft’s history and the stories behind its operations, further strengthening my personal connection to the Avro Lancaster. These experiences — from building plastic kits to highly detailed digital artwork, from air show memories to historical study — all have played a pivotal role in the development of the Avro Lancaster profile. Twenty years of design have come together in every piece of art I create today. They form the foundation of my passion for honouring aviation history through detailed, authentic, and heartfelt artwork.
